Spirulina

A blue-green cyanobacterium (Arthrospira platensis) that is 55-70% complete protein by dry weight—the highest protein density of any whole food. Spirulina's signature blue pigment, phycocyanin, is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound that inhibits NADPH oxidase and scavenges peroxyl radicals. It also delivers highly bioavailable iron (non-heme iron enhanced by its own vitamin C), B-vitamins, and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).

Recommended Intake & Goals

Add 1-2 teaspoons (3-6g) of spirulina powder to smoothies or water daily for a concentrated dose of bioavailable protein, iron, and phycocyanin antioxidant support.

Preparation & Usage Steps

  1. Phycocyanin is absorbed intact through the intestinal wall and enters systemic circulation, where it inhibits NADPH oxidase—the primary enzyme generating superoxide radicals during intense exercise.
  2. Spirulina's complete amino acid profile (all essential amino acids) provides rapidly digestible protein with a PDCAAS comparable to animal sources, supporting muscle protein synthesis.
  3. Iron from spirulina is absorbed as non-heme iron, but spirulina's intrinsic vitamin C and organic acids enhance conversion to the ferrous (Fe²⁺) form, increasing bioavailability.
  4. Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is converted to DGLA (dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid), which competes with arachidonic acid in the COX pathway, producing anti-inflammatory series-1 prostaglandins.

Nutrition Cues

"Start with 1/2 teaspoon and increase gradually—spirulina can cause nausea or digestive upset at higher initial doses."
"Buy from reputable sources that test for heavy metals (lead, mercury) and microcystins—contaminated spirulina is a real risk."
"Mix into cold smoothies or juices; high heat degrades phycocyanin pigment and reduces antioxidant potency."

Preparation Tips

  • Combine 1 tsp spirulina with 1/2 tsp vitamin C powder in your smoothie: the exogenous ascorbic acid dramatically enhances non-heme iron absorption and protects the phycocyanin from oxidation.
  • Use spirulina as a natural pre-workout: 5g taken 60 minutes before training has been shown to increase time-to-exhaustion by 10% through enhanced fat oxidation and reduced exercise-induced oxidative stress.

Synergistic Foods & Bio-boosts

  • Blue-Green Power Smoothie: Blend 1 tsp spirulina powder, 1 frozen banana, 1/2 cup frozen mango, 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1 tbsp almond butter, 8oz coconut water, and a squeeze of lime until smooth.

Common Pitfalls & Warnings

  • Buying cheap spirulina from unverified sources—it may contain toxic microcystins or heavy metals from contaminated water sources.
  • Taking large doses (10g+) without acclimation, which can cause nausea, headaches, and digestive distress from rapid detoxification effects.
  • Assuming spirulina is a reliable source of vitamin B12—it primarily contains pseudovitamin B12 (cobamide analogs) which are biologically inactive in humans.
